History at The Shelbourne

When The Shelbourne opened in the 1800s, it quickly established itself as an attraction for wealthy families, who would visit the city to “do the season” (a social season of balls, dinner parties and charity events) and lounge in the glamorous drawing rooms.

The Shelbourne earned its place in history from February through May 1922, when it hosted the drafting of Ireland’s first Constitution. Michael Collins chaired the committee and led the drafting of the Constitution of the Irish Free State in room 112, now called The Constitution Suite, which contains the original table and chairs.

Prior to that, The Shelbourne was at the center of conflict during The Easter Rising in 1916, as fighting often broke out on St. Stephen’s Green. A stray bullet even found its way into The Shelbourne’s traditional Afternoon Tea on Easter Monday. No one was hurt and guests carried on as normal. Two days later, the hotel opened its doors as a refuge, taking in the injured no matter which side they fought for.
